Brought to you by your Grayson Elementary School PTA
Teacher of the Year
Christa Fernandez
Congratulations to Christa Fernandez, our teacher of the year! Christa has been teaching kindergarten at Grayson Elementary School for 12 years. Her classroom is full of love and learning, and she cares about each and every student, which clearly shows. They love to come to school each day! You always see learning going on when you enter her classroom. She loves children's literature so story time is always special. She even has a "story ball" that she tosses gently to the children as they answer questions about the characters, setting, author, etc. She keeps students actively involved in their learning. Children in Christa's classroom sing to learn! You can walk into her class and hear them singing about vowels, patterns, compound words, etc. Visit sometime and see all of the great things happening in her room!

If you don't see Christa at Grayson Elementary School you are sure to see her out in the community. She loves to go to various events in which her students are participating. It could be a basketball game, a baseball game or a soccer game. She'll be there to cheer for her students!

Congratulations, Christa! We are proud of you!

Box Tops for Education box tops

Our first box tops submission is today, October 31st. We will be announcing our box tops prize winners on GETV soon and giving the school store gift certificates. However, we have one more opportunity to submit box tops for our school in the spring so please continue to save your box tops and submit them for the next round of prizes!

Once a student turns in 50 box tops, he or she will receive a gift certificate to the school store. We will also periodically award fun prizes to anyone who submits box tops with their name on them. Our top winners from each grade level will receive lunch with a friend for one Friday a month for three months and free ice cream at the first lunch.

Right now, Box Tops for Education has promotions where many products have more than one box top per package. You can go to www.boxtops4education.com for additional information or a listing of eligible products. Please be sure that when your box tops are turned into your child's teacher, your child's name, grade and teacher are noted on the plastic bag so all students turning in box tops have a chance for the drawings and prizes that will be given away.

Helping Your Child Learn From Their Mistakes

Most of us would agree that one of the best teachers is experience. Some of the best learning comes from experiencing the consequences of our behavior. While we agree with this, we often step in and don't allow our children to learn fully from their experiences.

It's instinctual to want to protect or shield our children from bad or uncomfortable things; but rescuing them can come with unintended outcomes. For example, your child forgets her homework on a consistent basis. You see it on the table and you decide to bring it to school so she won't receive a negative consequence such as a zero or staying in from recess to complete it. That's being a good parent, right? While bringing left homework in to school once or twice, isn't a problem, rescuing her on several occasions can actually be detrimental to her. This type of rescuing prevents her from learning from her mistakes and learning responsibility and accountability. Experiencing the negative consequences of our behavior causes us to think, "If I do _____________, then ______________ will happen. Do I really want to do______________?"

Rescuing your child has another unintended outcome. It sends a message "If I mess up, my parents will be there to clean up after me". When your child is in elementary school, the consequences for missed homework, running in the hallway, or talking in line aren't too troubling. The consequences might be missed recess, time in time out, loss of privileges, going to bed early, etc. When your child gets to high school, the misbehaviors can be more risky, such as skipping school, careless driving, underage drinking, experimental drug use, and promiscuous behavior. Likewise, the consequences are greater - failing grades, car accidents resulting in injury or death, dependence on alcohol or drugs, and pregnancy. It's best to teach children that their behaviors have consequences now while they are young so he or she can learn that misbehaviors have negative consequences.

Of course, our motivation for rescuing is protection. We only want good things for our children. But when we don't allow our child to experience the negative consequences for the choices they make by applying negative consequences ourselves or supporting the classroom teacher when he or she applies consequences, we're doing more harm than good.

So the next time you feel the urge to step in and rescue your child so he or she won't fully experience the negative consequences of his or her behavior, remember this:
Rescuing today can lead to even more risky behavior tomorrow.

Allow your child to learn from his or her mistakes. That's being a great teacher.

    Cafeteria News

Our Grab and Go Breakfast participation continues to grow! Since eating a healthy breakfast is such an important part of contributing to your child's success in school, we encourage your children to eat at home or eat a nutritional and great tasting breakfast at school! Don't forget that if your child is on free or reduced lunches, he or she is also eligible for free or reduced (30 cents) breakfast everyday. Full-pay breakfast for a child is only $1.00 everyday and our menus are posted on our school's website.

Our emphasis this month is on the benefits of FRUITS in your child's diet. We serve a great variety of fresh fruits everyday. Parents at Grayson will be happy to learn that many of our students select fruit as a side item with their lunches. Fruits are:
    • Rich in potassium- which helps maintain blood pressure
    • High in vitamin C - aids in tissue repair
    • High in folic acid - helps the body form red blood cells
    • Good source of fiber - aids in bowel function
    • Low in calories, fat and sodium
Check out this cute and colorful website - www.sunkist.com/kids - for children on the benefits of citrus fruit which also features a coloring page, crossword puzzle, games and fun facts.

With the holidays rapidly approaching, it would be tasty, healthy and calorie-smart to add a variety of fruits into our menus.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO OUR GRAYSON FAMILIES!
