Skate Night
Congratulations to Mrs. Meadows 3rd grade class for winning Best Attendance at Skate Night.

The next Skate Night is Jan 7th. Due to popular demand we will again give Can-D-Canes for cans to support our Community Outreach Food-drive Program. On Thursday students may bring their can items to Mrs. Hart during their lunch period and receive "free" candy canes, and don't forget to bring your cans to Skate night as well. The student who brings the most cans or other food items, wins a free prize and free admission to skate night!

Thank you so much for coming to skate night and participating in our food drives. Because of your generosity we are able to help others in need.

Science Update

The science room continues to be a busy place. The animals had keepers over the holidays! Thanks to those families. Some classes had High 5 Parties. Science is still collecting jars with lids (smaller is better than bigger). Science also needs empty oatmeal cardboard containers, empty coffee cans, empty cereal boxes, empty film containers, empty plastic bottles of different sizes etc. Fourth grade is into "sound". Thanks for all your support. Remind your children to show good manners in science and to work on "working with others". The science room always appreciates individually wrapped candy and goodies for the Treasure Box. Hope your 2010 is off to a great start!

Martial Arts Focus and Fitness Club

Grayson Elementary Martial Arts Focus and Fitness Club
Sponsor/Contact: Mrs. Kristie Horn

Grayson Elementary is currently offering a Martial Arts Focus and Fitness club on Wednesday mornings. The current session is going extremely well and we have received excellent feedback from both students and parents. The next session of the Martial Arts Focus and Fitness Club is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, January 13th. The club will still meet from 7:45 to 8:20am on Wednesday mornings for 9 weeks. There are now two certified instructors leading the class and the enrollment rates will stay the same as the first 9 week session.

BENEFITS OF MARTIAL ARTS...

Research has shown that children who participate in forms of "Martial Arts" are more confident, have better self-control, and concentrate better in school. It also helps to improve self-esteem & teaches self-discipline. Pediatricians have also "prescribed" martial arts for children who require a high-energy activity to help channel aggression. Focus, Fitness, and Fun will be our three main goals. Each week, the Black Belt Instructor will focus on "Character Development Traits", for example: respect, organization, perseverance, determination just to name a few. The instructors will also be teaching your child a variety of Martial Arts/Self-defense techniques. In other words... Your child will be learning valuable life skills as well as getting "Fit". Can you think of a better way to start their day?

If your child (Children) is/are interested in enrolling, feel free to print off the registration form from the Martial Arts Club link on the GES Web-site and return it to Mrs. Kristie Horn. If you have any questions or concerns you may also contact Mrs. Kristie Horn via email at Kristie_Horn@gwinnett.k12.ga.us. A frequently asked question this past session: What do the students wear? Martial Arts T-shirts and Martial Arts pants will be available for purchase. However, your child may simply wear comfortable P.E. clothing and is welcome to change in the bathroom after class if necessary.

GES PE Update

WOW, how time flies when you are having fun in PE. We have had a real busy 1st semester and the 2nd semester will be even busier. I hope that everyone had a "Great Holiday Season" and would like for all the families to start out the New Year by doing your best in promoting "fitness and living a healthy lifestyle" to your little ones. I would like for all of us to encourage to all of our children here at Grayson to try and do some type of physical activity for at least 10 minutes a day. This could be as simple walking around the house, up the stairs, jogging in place, sit-ups, push-ups, etc.

We will be starting out the New Year with our "fitness unit". In this unit, students will learn about their Heart, certain muscles and what they are used for, and why exercise is important to everyone's lifestyle. I will even be giving ideas to the students to do what I call, "commercial exercises". (IE: When we all sit down and watch a little TV, we can do little exercises during commercials.) So, be prepared for some questions from your little ones and please try and get involved with them with "promoting fitness".

Again, your help is always appreciated in everything here at Grayson ES.

Thanks for all you do and I look for a great and exciting New Year!
