| Community Outreach Penny Harvest
|
Fifth grade Penny Harvest Student Leaders bring sacks of "harvested" pennies into the gym for evaluation.
Our generous Grayson families' donations filled 29 sacks weighing about thirty pounds each. Throughout the spring
the Student Leaders will meet to discuss which local service organizations will be given grants from the collected
pennies, which total approximately $1000.00. For more information on this school-wide community service project,
please contact Christine Scartz at 678-407-0811 or tcscartz@comcast.net,
or visit www.pennyharvest.org.

| Community Outreach Coat Drive |
The Community Outreach Coat Drive was Awesome! Students from Grayson Elementary and McConnell Middle donated over
900 coats to this worthy cause. Coats were collected at both schools and a drop box was also located at Grayson
Kroger. Thank you to Kroger's Store Manager Nelson Grant for providing cupcakes to the homerooms with the most
donations. Thank you to Walgreens and Store Manager Tornica Chaney for the candy donations to all students who
participated. And a special thanks to Mitiz Bishop (GES) and Cheryl Copeland (MMS) and their students for their
time and dedication. This was truly a blessed event! With your help the coats were distributed to 3 local shelters
and provided immediate need to area families. I can personally say your efforts were appreciated as I witnessed the
smiles and welcomed all the hugs I received. Grayson Elementary's homeroom winner was Ms. Creel's 3rd grade and
McConnell's homeroom winner was Mr. Yoder's 6th grade. Thanks again for giving and remember.......
RECYCLE! REUSE

Box Tops for Education
Our next box tops submission is going to be February 28th, so please continue to save your Box Tops and submit them
for the next round of prizes! We are also accepting Tyson A+ labels and Campbell's Soup Labels.
Once a student turns in 50 Box Tops for Education, they will receive a gift certificate to the school store. We will
also periodically award fun prizes to anyone who submits box tops with their name on them. Our top winners from each
grade level will receive lunch with a friend for one Friday a month for three months and free ice cream at the first
lunch.
Right now, Box Tops for Education has a promotion where many products have more than one box top per package. You can
go to www.boxtops4education.com for additional information or a listing of eligible products. Please be sure that
when your box tops are turned into your child's teacher, your child's name, grade and teacher are noted on the plastic
bag so all students turning in box tops have a chance for the drawings and prizes that will be given away.

Cafeteria News
YOUR CAFETERIA STAFF WISHES YOU A HEALTHY AND HAPPY 2009!!
Our staff, teachers and parents continue to rave about our adult serving line. For only $2.50 we have the best deal in
town - one entrée plus 2 sides or a vegetarian plate. Your drink is free with your meal. Everything beyond that may be
purchased ala carte. We encourage you to have lunch with your children as they are still very excited about parents,
grandparents and relatives eating with them in the cafeteria. Please remember that outside food is not allowed in our
cafeteria. If you do pick up outside food at a local establishment, you may eat with your child on the table outside
the front office or outside on school grounds. This is county-wide school policy and we thank you in advance for your
cooperation.
We continue to serve our Grab and Go Breakfasts and wish to inform new families that if your child is receiving free
or reduced lunches, he or she is also entitled to free or reduced breakfast. Our nutrition website at
www.gwinnett.k12.ga.us/gcsnp.nsf will lead you to the
eligibility requirements and application process.
Most of us are starting 2009 with plans to take off those extra pounds!! Well, did you know that recent research
shows that consuming at least 3 servings of dairy per day may help control weight and body fat??
Our educational emphasis during this month will be on the importance of calcium which is a super nutrient needed to
build strong bones. Daily calcium needs for children and adults are as follows:
Age 1-3 years: 500 mg; Age 4-8 years: 800 mg; 9-18 years: 1,300 mg;
Age 19-50 years: 1,000 and Age 51+ years needs 1,200 mg
3 Servings a Day (Milk, Cheese, or Yogurt are good sources). One serving is
- (1) 8 oz glass of milk (preferably 2%, 1% or skim) = 300 mg calcium
- (1) 8 oz container of yogurt = up to 400 mg calcium
- 1.5 oz cheese (about the size of a matchbox) = 30 mg calcium
If your child is lactose intolerant, please send us a note stating this fact. It MUST be signed by your doctor.
We will then gladly substitute the milk with orange juice or soymilk with his/her school purchased lunch at no extra
charge. If your child brings his lunch from home he may purchase orange juice ala carte at 40 cents or soymilk ala
carte at 60 cents. Again, this is only with a Dr's note on file.
Reading our children a great book and serving them some delicious hot chocolate will strengthen their growing bones
as well as making some sweet memories. Easy on those marshmallows for our hot chocolates though - remember that New
Year's resolution!!
Until next month - Be Happy! Be Healthy!
