National Elementary Honor Society Formed at Grayson
|
Many parents and teachers will recall the National Honor Society during their high school days. The National Association of Elementary School
Principals is sponsoring the creation of the National Elementary Honor Society. (NEHS) and Grayson has done the work to induct the charter group of
students into the NEHS. On Tuesday evening November 17, the first group of fourth and fifth grade students were inducted by a ceremony that included
the third, fourth and fifth grade teachers and administrators donning the appropriate regalia to march into the gym to participate in the ceremony.
The Honor Choir sang and the members of the Faculty Council performed the induction. A reception for the parents and students was held afterwards.
The students were selected based on criteria suggested by the NEHS . To be selected, students had to have made all A's last year and the first nine weeks
of this year. Then, teacher recommendations were sought and candidates had to submit information about scholarship, leadership, service and
responsibility. These students not only excel in academics, but also in the other areas. Grayson is very proud to be a part of this new national
organization. The candidates selected for the Charter group are:
Fifth grade: Rameen Forghani, Kaylan Franklin, Christine George, Jenny Helms, Peyton Hutchinson, Karan Joshi, Cole McDaniel, E.D. Thompson, Theresa
Uwe
Fourth Grade: Anna Calacione, Caroline Evans, Veronica Feldman, Sean Floyd, Ayan Ismail, Hunter Lloyd, Natalie Lott, Ryan Metcalf, Trevor Nelson,
Alexa Thompson, Madison Walker
The group will have several service projects this year and will hear inspirational speakers as well as learn about leadership. The goal of the
NEHS is to support excellence in academics and in leadership, service and personal responsibility. Mrs. Donna Ward and Mrs. Susan Wilson are the
Chapter Advisers and the Faculty Council includes Dr. Ginger O'Neal, Mrs. Denise Tiencken, Mrs. RoseMary Ruffner, and Mrs. Ward and Mrs. Wilson.

science. Thank you to those who have been sending in individually wrapped
candies, erasers or toys. It keeps our Treasure Box going. Science is
still collecting small jars with lids. Second grade might make butter. If
the jars are glass, make sure they do not travel on the bus. Science will
need volunteer animal sitters for the holidays.

Counselor's Corner
Helping Your Child Learn From Their Mistakes
Most of us would agree that one of the best teachers is experience. Some of the best learning comes from experiencing
the consequences of our behavior. While we agree with this, we often step in and don't allow our children to learn
fully from their experiences.
It's instinctual to want to protect or shield our children from bad or uncomfortable things; but rescuing them can
come with unintended outcomes. For example, your child forgets her homework on a consistent basis. You see it on the
table and you decide to bring it to school so she won't receive a negative consequence such as a zero or staying in
from recess to complete it. That's being a good parent, right? While bringing left homework in to school once or
twice, isn't a problem, rescuing her on several occasions can actually be detrimental to her. This type of rescuing
prevents her from learning from her mistakes and learning responsibility and accountability. Experiencing the negative
consequences of our behavior causes us to think, "If I do _____________, then ______________ will happen.
Do I really want to do______________?"
Rescuing your child has another unintended outcome. It sends a message "If I mess up, my parents will be there to clean
up after me". When your child is in elementary school, the consequences for missed homework, running in the hallway, or
talking in line aren't too troubling. The consequences might be missed recess, time in time out, loss of privileges,
going to bed early, etc. When your child gets to high school, the misbehaviors can be more risky, such as skipping
school, careless driving, underage drinking, experimental drug use, and promiscuous behavior. Likewise, the
consequences are greater - failing grades, car accidents resulting in injury or death, dependence on alcohol or
drugs, and pregnancy. It's best to teach children that their behaviors have consequences now while they are young so
he or she can learn that misbehaviors have negative consequences.
Of course, our motivation for rescuing is protection. We only want good things for our children. But when we don't
allow our child to experience the negative consequences for the choices they make by applying negative consequences
ourselves or supporting the classroom teacher when he or she applies consequences, we're doing more harm than good.
So the next time you feel the urge to step in and rescue your child so he or she won't fully experience the negative
consequences of his or her behavior, remember this:
Rescuing today can lead to even more risky behavior tomorrow.
Allow your child to learn from his or her mistakes. That's being a great teacher.

Martial Arts Focus and Fitness Club
Grayson Elementary Martial Arts Focus and Fitness Club
Sponsor/Contact: Mrs. Kristie Horn
Grayson Elementary is currently offering a Martial Arts Focus and Fitness club on Wednesday mornings. The current session is going extremely
well and we have received excellent feedback from both students and parents. The next session of the Martial Arts Focus and Fitness Club is
scheduled to begin on Wednesday, January 13th. The club will still meet from 7:45 to 8:20am on Wednesday mornings for 9 weeks. There are now
two certified instructors leading the class and the enrollment rates will stay the same as the first 9 week session.
BENEFITS OF MARTIAL ARTS...
Research has shown that children who participate in forms of "Martial Arts" are more confident, have better self-control, and concentrate
better in school. It also helps to improve self-esteem & teaches self-discipline. Pediatricians have also "prescribed" martial arts for
children who require a high-energy activity to help channel aggression. Focus, Fitness, and Fun will be our three main goals. Each week, the
Black Belt Instructor will focus on "Character Development Traits", for example: respect, organization, perseverance, determination
just to name a few. The instructors will also be teaching your child a variety of Martial Arts/Self-defense techniques. In other words...
Your child will be learning valuable life skills as well as getting "Fit". Can you think of a better way to start their day?
If your child (Children) is/are interested in enrolling, feel free to print off the registration form from the Martial Arts Club link on the
GES Web-site and return it to Mrs. Kristie Horn. If you have any questions or concerns you may also contact Mrs. Kristie Horn via email at
Kristie_Horn@gwinnett.k12.ga.us. A frequently asked question this past session:
What do the students wear? Martial Arts T-shirts and Martial Arts pants will be available for purchase. However, your child may simply wear
comfortable P.E. clothing and is welcome to change in the bathroom after class if necessary.

Help Feed the Birds at Grayson Elementary!
In the cold winter insects, fruits and seeds can be hard to find and many birds may struggle to find enough to eat. This is why we like to put
food out for them at our school.
Just like us, different birds like to eat different foods. So by putting out a mix of foods, it is more likely that lots of different birds will
come to our school grounds to feed, and our students will be able to enjoy seeing a variety of birds on the grounds of our school. We have a lot of
feeders on the grounds of our school and we would like to keep them full for the birds this winter. If you and your family would like to donate a bag
of birdseed for our bird feeders, please send them to the main office. We will make sure to fill up our feeders with them this winter!

Odyssey of the Mind
Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem solving opportunities for students from kindergarten to
college. Teams find creative ways to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary
classics. They take their solutions to compete on the local, state and world level. Teams from across the United States and twenty-five other
countries participate in the program. Teams placing first, second or third in their division will advance to the state competition.
Forty - one students will represent Grayson Elementary this year on Odyssey of the Mind teams! We will have five teams representing our school at
the regional tournament at Parkview High School on Saturday, March 20. We will have one primary team and four teams competing in Division I. Plus, we
have an additional eight students on two Grayson Cluster Community teams. We look forward to cheering on these teams and seeing how they learn and
grow to be "out of the box" thinkers!
