Mini-Fundraisers

Thank you to all the families and staff who continue to send in their General Mills Box Top and Campbell's soup labels. We have had a lot of success with both programs this year and we could not do it without our Grayson Elementary Families. We will be sending out the last collection worksheet for the year, so be on the look out for the sheet in your students Friday Folder. Look on the boxtops4education website for valuable savings on your grocery bill. If you have not already joined on line, it's not too late to start earning money for our school and saving money for your family. Keep sending us your box tops and labels as we will be collecting both until the last day of school!

Happy Clipping!
Thank you,

Science Update

Science thanks the parents and the children for a great year! Dagger, the snake, is coming for an end of the year visit. A lot of the children have been asking about him. He is a ball python. Kids do not hold him. He is not poisonous. This week K- 3rd grades have been taking part in Earth Day activities. The science has even had some pets from children's homes come and visit us. Let Mrs. Green know if you'd like to take care of the rabbits or the guinea pig over the summer. Bring a note with your Mom/Dad's name(s) , number(s) and email address(es) on it. Food and cages would come with the animals, of course! The science room always needs treats for the treasure box. Work hard on your science projects if you are in 4th and 5th grades. Have a fabulous summer everyone. Science is all around you. Take time to see it.

Odyssey of the Mind

Grayson Elementary Odyssey of the Mind Teams Advance to State and the World Finals!

Five teams from Grayson Elementary School recently ventured to Parkview High School to compete against public and private schools from across Georgia in this year's Odyssey of the Mind Regional Tournament.

After months of preparation, the teams had the opportunity to highlight their hard work. Odyssey of the Mind is an international organization that provides the opportunity for children to develop creative and critical thinking skills and apply them to real-life situations.

Each year teams are given a list of five long-term problems. From this list, they must choose one as their challenge and spend several months preparing a performance. This includes writing scripts, designing sets, and creating characters appropriate to the problem.

In addition to the long-term problem solving process, teams are required to participate in spontaneous problem solving. The team members are given a short amount of time to provide creative responses to a variety of stimuli without advance preparation. Teams are scored based upon the creativity of their responses.

Teams of students consist of no more than seven members and their coach--who guides them through the creative problem-solving process while they sharpen their own negotiating and problem-solving skills in a team environment.

With the support of the parent volunteers, and the schools' gifted education department, Grayson Elementary sent five teams that competed in the various problem-solving activities.

Each of the Grayson teams performed well, with two teams advancing to the state competition in Columbus at Columbus State University on April 10, 2010.

In Nature Trail'R Division I, our 5th grade team placed 3rd in region with 281.38 points and 6th in state with 266.37 points.

In the Discovered Treasures Division I, our 3rd grade team placed first in region with 335.19 points and second in State with 324.33 points.

Our 3rd grade team will now participate in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals at the University of Michgan at the end of May. The World competition features hundreds of teams, from over 25 countries, competing against each other. The children who are lucky enough to participate in the World Finals have the opportunity to spend four days interacting with their peers from around the world. What an educational opportunity!

The team will continue to perfect their problem until May and try to raise money to pay for the trip to Michigan. The team is graciously accepting donations to help fund their trip. Tax deductible donations may be sent to Mrs. Donna Ward at Grayson Elementary.

Odyssey of the Mind shows that a little creativity can go a long way, and Grayson Elementary has a history with it taking students all the way to the World Finals. Our school is proud to say this is the 3rd team in the last 5 years to represent our school at the OotM World Finals.

Congratulations to all the students at Grayson Elementary who participated in Odyssey of the Mind this year and our best wishes to our 3rd graders at the World Finals in May!

Team of 7 Brilliant Third Graders Going To World Competition
Grayson Elementary "Odyssey of the Mind"
By Yvette Thomas
Grayson Elementary School is pleased to announce the outstanding accomplishment of its third grade "Odyssey of the Mind" team. They were recently awarded the honor of representing the State of Georgia at the World Finals at Michigan State University the week of May 26-May 30th. Teams from around the world will compete in each division.

Congratulations to the members who are: Chandler Thomas, Riley McNeill, Hannah Jaffee, Evan Thompson, Annabel Beckett, Ben and Grace Scartz for a job well done!

The door of memorable possibilities opened for them after they placed first at the Regional competition at Parkview High School in Lilburn and placed 2nd at the State Finals in Columbus. The team under the direction of it's coaches; Christine Scartz and Kris McNeill, put in countless hours for months in preparation for their various competitions.

The World Competition will have many wonderful, life changing experiences for the entire team. In addition to competing for the title of "Best in the World" they will have the privilege of attending the Creativity Festival, and enjoying the many interesting interactive booths including one supplied by NASA.

Grayson Elementary third grade team is good enough to be the best in the entire world!

We do not want finances to keep our team from competing, that's why we need your help. Conservatively it will cost the entire team $14,000.00 to compete. The costs are: Odyssey of the Mind fees, food, housing, and transportation. We have very little time to raise the necessary funds. We are asking you to please partner with us with any financial amount to help these kids partake in a journey that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

We thank you in advance for your generous donation! You are investing in your leaders of tomorrow and the future of America.

Please mail your donation to:
